Erin recently finished in first place in the quest to secure a spot on the US World Cup Luge team. There were six women competing for three seats. USA Luge held a series of three races and awarded points based on the finish. Race one was in Lake Placid and Erin was in 3rd place after that competition. Then they moved on to Germany where Erin finished in first (November 4) to move up to second in the standings. And on Saturday, November 11 in Igls, Austria, Erin again finished in first place to move up to the top position in the point standing. With that she earned the right to compete in World Cup competition.

The first world cup of the season is November 18 back in Cesana Pariol, Italy where the Olympics were in February. The second world cup will be in Park City, Utah the weekend of December 1, and then the team moves up to Calgary, Canada for world cup 3. USA Luge will re-evaluate the team before World Cup 4 in Nagano, Japan the weekend of December 15.

World Cup racing resumes after the Christmas holiday with 5 more races. The season will conclude with the US Nationals in Lake Placid the weekend of March 2 – the only local race if area residents want to see Erin compete.

A REMSEN OLYMPIAN

Our own hometown "luger", Erin Hamlin, has done it again in front of her Remsen friends, luge friends and family and is on her way to the Olympic Games in Turino, Italy this February.  On December 16, 2005 Erin secured a 5th place finish in the Senior World Cup held in Lake Placid, NY.  This was the finish she needed to slide her way onto the 2006 Olympic team.

Being a luge athlete has taken hard work, dedication, determination and sacrifice for Erin to have come this far this fast.  How on earth, you ask, did she start this icy adventure?  It began on a warm sunny August afternoon in a Syracuse, NY park, a fun activity for a summer's day.  This was the day she was introduced to the sport of luge, the French word for sled.  Her dream of being an Olympic gymnast switched from a four apparatus gym to tracks bathed in ice that can drop 30 stories through twists and turns at speeds from 70-80 miles per hour.

Erin grew up in Remsen, NY just like any other kid.  She played AYSO, T-Ball, took gymnastics and wasn't even very fond of rides.  Can you believe that?  As her luge career began, she continued her academics and athletics at Remsen Central School excelling in soccer and track and maintaining her average with the help and support from all her teachers. Her time training in Lake Placid continued to increase as the climb up the United States Luge Association pyramid to the Olympic Games began.

Each spring the USLA makes their team selections for the following sliding season based on performance on the track and physical testing.  They look for continued improvement an results, both of which Erin continually seemed to produce.  Each year she made the cut advancing through the development and junior levels of competition.  After three seasons traveling in Europe with the Jr. National team and two Jr. National Championship titles, she is now headed to Torino, Italy, the site of the XX Winter Olympic Games.

The German women have dominated the sport for years, but at least this time down the track they'll be looking over their shoulders to see where the hometown "Lugers" from the USA came from.  For one of those USA "Lugers" we can say, "Remsen, NY".
